Natsuko Kanno

I am a contemporary calligraphy artist who was born in Tokyo and who graduated from the Calligraphy Department of Tokyo Gakugei University.

From an early age, I had studied under my grandfather, who was also a calligrapher,

in addition to being deeply influenced by my uncle, an artist.

As I studied Japanese cultural traditions such as calligraphy and tea ceremony,

I began creating contemporary works of art with an aesthetic sensibility that was cultivated in Tokyo, where I was born and raised.

I hope to convey the importance of the influence that calligraphy has had on the human race by drawing on my personal experience of having restored a sense of balance to my life through my engagement with calligraphy during a period when I was experiencing mental and physical difficulties. I am currently involved in creating opportunities for people to embrace the joy of calligraphy, mainly through my classes.

There is a strong belief in East Asia that calligraphy must be practiced with one’s right hand because of the way the characters are written.

However, as a left-handed person, I have experienced the limitations of restricting the use of my left hand. Therefore, I often emphasize the importance of using your dominant hand in calligraphy.

For me, I have been actively creating works written with my left hand.

In addition to my exhibitions in Japan, I have also participated in international exhibitions, including two exhibitions in France. I am actively involved in workshops and performances both in Japan and abroad as well.

Works
Sumi

Beauty of the moment

In this work, I used waste paper, old ink stick , and acrylic to give form to the aesthetic experience of renouncing our earthly life in favor of a state of play, an idea that is close to the heart of traditional Japanese culture.

This work possesses an understated beauty in its minimalist approach.

The beautiful shadows cast by the characters are foregrounded in this work.

Performance

The appeal of calligraphy, which has been a traditional Oriental visual art since ancient times, goes beyond the finished work itself. Calligraphy also celebrates the beauty of the artist’s brush pressure, their breathing technique, the rhythm of their brush strokes, and the movements involved in the writing process. In this performance, sensors were used to detect and record the brush movements during the writing process, something that is usually difficult to showcase through the final paper-based work itself. The Japanese characters for the four seasons of “spring,” “summer,” “autumn,” and “winter” in Japan are written in the respective colors of each season. This work allows the audience to appreciate the invisible movements that make up these characters.
